Tongue Wagging (Part 1)

Picture of Tongue Wagging (Part 1)
James 3:1-5a
In chapter three, James changes to the subject of the tongue and communication. Because of the length and detail of this subject, Pastor Jack deals with it in two parts. James starts by saying that since teachers are so visible and easily heard they will therefore will be subject to a more strict judgment. By way of comparison, James uses the example of horses’ bits and ships’ rudders to show how small objects control something much larger. The tongue, likewise being small, has the capacity to influence and control much through our speech.

Tongue Wagging (Part 2)

Picture of Tongue Wagging (Part 2)
James 3:5b-12
Having introduced the subject of the tongue, a small member of the body, yet has the power to control much, James now looks at the negative aspects of its use. To make his point, James compares the tongue to a forest fire showing how just a spark can cause so much damage. Likewise the tongue, being a small member of the body, can do great damage. A few misspoken words can make a person completely unwelcome. Moreover the tongue can ruin the reputation of a church body. Finally, James shows how water cannot be both bitter and fresh, a fruit tree cannot bear both good and bad fruit, yet the tongue can be used to both bless and curse. Therefore, as believers, we need the Holy Spirit to control our tongues and our lives.

Wisdom From Below

Picture of Wisdom From Below
James 3:13-16
In the concluding verses of chapter three, James contrasts earthly wisdom with the wisdom that comes from above. In this study, Pastor Jack looks at what James defines as earthly wisdom and how that wisdom manifests itself. By using several illustrations, he shows how this wisdom can easily be seen and certainly should have no place in the life of a believer.

Wisdom From Above

Picture of Wisdom From Above
James 3:17-18
In verses 13-16, Pastor Jack looked at the wisdom that is earthly and its characteristics. By contrast, he now examines what James calls the wisdom that is from above, Godly wisdom. Wisdom is knowing how to apply knowledge in both attitude and action. Wisdom that comes from God is pure, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

The Source Of Strife

Picture of The Source Of Strife
James 4:1-3
James taught us about the wisdom that comes from below (James 3:13-16) and now shows us how that wisdom can be carried into the Church and into the lives of believers. When conflicts arise, we quickly blame others, but Pastor Jack will point out that James places the blame for such conflicts on our old sin nature and left uncorrected will grow into very ungodly confrontations.

The Effect Of Unfaithfulness

Picture of The Effect Of Unfaithfulness
James 4:4-6a
Throughout Scripture we are told that the world and God have nothing in common. Jesus told his disciples that they were not of the world but rather He had chosen them out of the world. With that in mind, James shows that when believers pursue the world and its influences then they become God’s enemies. As such, James says they become spiritual adulterers and adulteresses. As we give our lives to Jesus we become betrothed to Him as a bride to a futures husband. Therefore, as believers, we are to keep ourselves unspotted from the taint of this world.

Submit, Resist, Draw Near, And Humble

Picture of Submit, Resist, Draw Near, And Humble
James 4:6b-10
In the previous verses, James warns us to be separated from worldly influences. Now beginning in the latter part of verse 6 of James 4, we are told what we are to do to maintain a relationship with God, yet reside in this world. The most important step is to submit to God and the one thing that will keep us from doing that is pride. That’s why God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. In this study, Pastor Jack shows us that by submitting to God and His will, we will resist the devil.

Sin I Presume

Picture of Sin I Presume
James 4:11-17
Earlier, James talked about pride and how God resists it. Now in verse 11, he begins to teach about the sin of presumption and how it manifests itself in two ways. First by judging others. When we judge others, we set ourselves up to be God, placing ourselves above the Law and do that which only God can rightly do. Secondly, we can play God with our own lives by determining to do our own will apart from God’s will. Pastor Jack points out that since life is so uncertain, we should always live our lives being completely surrendered to the will of God.

Four Indictments

Picture of Four Indictments
James 5:1-6
At the end of chapter 4, James warned about living lives independently of God. In the verses of this study, James gives warnings to those who arrogantly seek to live lives without God’s oversight. In the first six verses of chapter 5, Pastor Jack brings out four indictments against individuals who are driven by their wealth and as such seek gain at the expense of others.

The Lord Is Coming To Make It Right

Picture of The Lord Is Coming To Make It Right
James 5:7-12
With all the trials of life, we have a tendency to become weary and want to escape. James was writing to Jewish Christians who were suffering for their faith and no doubt wanting to give up. To encourage them, James tells them about the coming of the Lord and that they need to establish their hearts with a rock-solid confidence of His soon coming. Like a farmer who plants and waits for the harvest, they need to continue to wait as well, knowing that the sure harvest of the Lord will come to pass.
