Saul has been king for some 30 years. Early on, his disobedience lost him his dynasty (13:13-14) and now he will lose his position altogether. We know that God in his mercy forgives a weak man who repents, but Saul never gets to that point. We learn from Saul's persistent disobedience that a point can be reached where God will no longer warn, but will consign a person to a hopeless future.
