Festus and the Fear of Man
Acts 25
Paul spends two years in prison under Felix who is then succeeded by Festus. Like Felix, Festus is approached by the Jews accusing Paul of crimes worthy of death, whereupon, Paul is granted a hearing. Again no accusation of any law breaking is heard. Like so many Roman rulers, Festus feared the Jews and was ready to appease their demands. Paul, hearing this, appealed to Caesar. His conscience still being bothered, Festus invites Herod Arippa to hear Paul so that he may be able to write some kind of charge against Paul before sending him on to Rome.
