Acts 6:8-15
Continuing from the previous study where we have learned that the Church was to choose seven men, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, and appoint them as overseers of the temporal needs of the people. One of those men was Stephen, a man whom we are told was full of faith, who became a fearless witness of the Lord Jesus Christ. In this study, Pastor Jack reminds us of the characteristics of the kind of individuals that God uses, characteristics that were found in Stephen.

Acts 7:1-50
Acts 7 tells us how quickly God raised up Stephen from being a serving deacon in the fledgling of the Church to a Bible teacher fearlessly teaching the religious leaders in Jerusalem. In Acts 7 we have one the longest sermons recorded where Stephen recaps Israel’s history in laying the foundation for his cutting message that provoked the religious leaders to make him the first recorded martyr of the Church.

Stephen Finishes Well

Acts 7:51-60
Stephen was one of the great men of faith in the early church. Though he was not an apostle, he holds a special place in scripture because he was chosen to minister to the widows who were being cared for in Jerusalem. From his first ministry of caring for widows, the Lord raised him up to be a powerful witness to the point of being brought before the Sanhedrin. In this study, Stephen now brings an indictment against the Jewish religious leaders based on present and past history that angered the men to the point that they spontaneously stoned Stephen until dead making him the first martyr of the Church.

Acts 8:1-8
Early on, Jesus told the Disciples that they would be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the world. Little did they know that it would require a well-placed persecution to move the disciples out of Jerusalem to the very places Jesus said to go. It was during this time that God began to raise up Philip, one of the seven original deacons, and send him to Samaria.

Acts 8:9-25
After a great persecution came against the Early Church in Jerusalem, the believers were scattering throughout the various regions of Israel including Samaria. It was in Samaria that Philip, one of the faithful deacons of the Jerusalem church, went to preach the Gospel. As the Gospel went out, it was accompanied by many miracles where demon possessed people were delivered and many were healed of illnesses. These events attracted a sorcerer by the name of Simon who wanted to purchase the power to do the same thing. Word of this excitement made its way back to Jerusalem, which prompted Peter and John to venture to Samaria to check things out which in turn brought these men to rebuke Simon and demand his repentance.

Acts 8:26-40
It would not seem logical to leave a thriving revival where many souls were being saved to travel to a remote area of the desert to reach just one soul. But such was the case with Philip who was experiencing a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit who was then directed by the Lord to go to Gaza and reach an Ethiopian traveling back to his homeland. As Philip encountered this man, who was a government official, he found his heart open and searching the Scripture for answers to life. At the Holy Spirit’s prompting, Philip explained Isaiah 53 which led this man to be saved, baptized, and then carry the message of the Gospel to his native Ethiopia. This account points up the fact that God will make sure that a sincere, searching heart will find answers.

Acts 9:17-31
If we lived in the first century and knew of Saul’s reputation, most of us, like Anaias, would conclude that he would never get saved. Thankfully, God saw things differently. He had chosen Saul, who later became the great Apostle Paul. Little did Anaias realize the plans that God had for this chosen vessel to bear His name to the Gentiles. From this study, we can learn that God has ways of getting even to a heart that seems to be working against all that God stands for.

Being Available For The Lord's Use

Acts 9:32-43
Peter, like the burning bush in the wilderness that the Lord used to reveal Himself to Moses, is used by God to bring healing and deliverance to many. In this study, Pastor Jack looks at two instances where God worked through Peter to heal Aeneas and raise up Dorcas, a faithful and loved servant, who had died. Like Peter, God is looking for faithful and willing vessels to reveal His love and power to those in need.
