The first book of the Bible, Genesis, is known as the “Book of Beginnings.” We are now about to embark on a journey through what is considered the second most important book in the Old Testament. The Book of Exodus has been recognized as the “Book of Redemption.” Exodus is the record of Israel’s birth as a nation. Redemption by blood is a prominent theme in the Book of Exodus, and it foreshadows the work of our Lord Jesus Christ as He willingly paid the penalty for our sin with His own blood at Calvary.

The book of Galatians is most likely the first book Paul ever wrote and it has come to be known as the Magna Carta of spiritual liberty. The message throughout the book is clearly salvation by grace. The church in Galatia had begun their Christian experience by faith, but was now turning again to the works of the Law. Paul boldly declares them “foolish” for such turning back.

This letter was written to believers not unlike you and me. They, too, lived in a time of moral decay, political instability, and social deterioration. They experienced failure, disappointment, doubt, and major persecution for their faith, but they learned through the inspired teaching of this letter how these trials could be transformed into something eternally profitable. James’ hard-hitting, no-nonsense teaching exposed their carelessness, indifference and disobedience with love and compassion. His desire was to lead them into a deeper commitment to the Lord by showing them the necessity of doing—not just hearing—the Word of God. The same challenge is set before us through this study—Will we be doers of the Word or just hearers only?

The book of Joshua is the book of new beginnings. It is the first of the twelve historical books of the Old Testament. After forty years of wandering in the wilderness, the Lord brought His people into the Promised Land, to their inheritance, which He had prepared for them. Similarly, we too, are in need of a new beginning and God would have His children to enter in and experience the peace and rest of the Promised Land, even as we battle the enemies that still remain.

The life of King David is given to us by the Lord in forty action packed chapters in the Old Testament. They include his rise to the throne (1Samuel 16-31), many of his most notable triumphs (2Samuel 1-10), his troubles (2Samuel 11-20) and his death (1Kings 2). Through David’s life, God reveals to us how powerfully He can work through a heart that is yielded to Him. The stories and lessons in these awesome chapters are ones that we should know well and learn from, for in them God makes known His love, strength, and plans for our lives today as we seek to follow Him in the 21st century.

This letter was sent to some very young believers, and yet Paul wasted no time speaking to them about a wide variety of spiritual topics! It is an awesome little book, each chapter ending with a reference to the return of Jesus for the church at the rapture. The hope of Jesus' coming should affect the way we live as we wait for Him. This hope stirs us to holy living and causes us to wait with great expectation. Are you?

As we begin our study of the book of Nehemiah, we will learn invaluable lessons that will tremendously strengthen and encourage us in our walk with our Lord Jesus Christ. The book of Nehemiah is one of the best Old Testament books on the subject of our service to God. During Nehemiah’s life, he served as the cupbearer to the king, a builder of walls and a mighty servant leader of God’s people. Nehemiah’s life is an example of the biblical truth, if we are faithful in the little, God will indeed entrust much to us.

Philippians is a joyful letter, the happiest letter the Apostle Paul ever penned. It was written in 60–62 ad as a letter of thanks, a letter of encouragement and a reminder to the church at Philippi of the joy and rejoicing found in the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippi was the first city on the continent of Europe in which the gospel of Jesus Christ was ever preached (Acts 16). The Lord used a night vision to reveal to Paul that he should go to Macedonia. The church began with the conversion of Lydia, a demon-possessed girl, and a jailer and his family. It is easy to forget, when reading this letter, that Paul was in Rome under house arrest while he was writing, yet we hear no complaining, no bitterness, and no resentment — just rejoicing!
