An area of human weakness is showing favoritism. With that in mind, James begins to address the issue by pointedly teaching that as believers we cannot show partiality. Furthermore, James drives his point home by using an illustration from a typical church setting. The first four verses of chapter two set the stage for James' further instruction on how we as believers must not show favoritism towards others whether they be rich or poor.
